Brandon

TGA, Arterial Switch

Brandon was born with transposition of the great arteries (TGA). He underwent surgery when he was 5 days old. He had a really hard time recovering from his surgery and developed other problems. He underwent many shunt surgeries for hydrocephalus. Due to all his time in the hospital, he was severely delayed in all of his areas of development. Thus, he underwent years of therapy. He finally was able to go without the therapy and go to school but, had had several problems in the motor skills and consistency areas. He has not ever really been able to keep up with the physical activities of his peers and spends a lot of time alone or with children a lot older or a lot younger than himself. He is a wonderful sweetheart of a boy who captures the heart of almost everyone who meets him. He loves people and animals and reading is a special passion of his. Not bad for a kid they thought would never go to mainstream school!

We are now getting ready to go back to Denver for a stent and a pulmonary artery replacement. The doctor said that he has outgrown his ventricles. We will be there for several weeks and away from our other kids and away from our jobs. Trying to figure our way through holding down two household for the summer and how to get through another surgery. Brandon has always been too high risk for an insurance company to cover, so we are self pay on this trip and a little scared, but, God is good and we are trusting in Him to make all things work for our good.

— Amanda, Brandon's mom (Billings, Montana)
