ASD and VSD, repaired with open heart surgery

Caleb,  two years old

Caleb had an ASD and VSD repair at age one on Jan. 1, 2002. Caleb's condition was not discovered until he was 15 weeks and had RSV. At that time his heart was enlarged and the defect was very noticeable. They told us at this time about the VSD only. We thought he had a chance that it would close on its own, or he could live with it. Trips to the hospital started getting to be a normal routine from breathing treatments. Finally, we were given a machine at home and things were better. Every time he got a cold, breathing became a real chore.

Finally the day came when Caleb was one for his routine check- up. The next thing we know we are talking to a surgeon about a heart cath the next day. The day we got home from the heart cath, they called to say that the surgeons office will be calling to set up an appointment. His heart was adjusting to the extra work, but the pressures in his lungs were not equal. We met the surgeon a couple days later and learned that Caleb also had an ASD. We choose to wait a couple of weeks for surgery so we could celebrate Christmas.

On January 2 2002, Caleb under went open heart surgery. A patch was placed to repair the VSD and the surgeon stitched the ASD . Caleb was truly amazing! Twenty fours hours after surgery he sat up and played ball with that beautiful smile of his.

Caleb has had his one year post-op check up and all is great. He is healthy and happy! We thank family and friends for unconditional love and support. And most of all we thank God for giving us this chance to be parents to this wonderful child!
