Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), s/p repair 1993

Hello, My name is Dayna. I was diagnosed with an ASD in 1993, underwent repair of the ASD with post-op complications that included pneumothorax, pericarditis and major depression.

Today, I follow up with my cardiologist every 5 years for an echo, to make sure the patch is still stable. I recently went for my echo, which did not show any leakage around the patch. However, I do experience a fast heart rate/irregular heart rate on occasion. My exercise capacity is still not 100%, and the cardiologist is trying to sort this piece out.

I am married, and I am thinking of starting a family soon. However, I do have my fears as to the CHD that may be passed on to the child. Both my mom and my grandmother had an ASD. After my experience with CHD, I became a physician assistant (just like a nurse practitioner) because I knew what it was like to be a patient. I currently practice in-patient medicine at a rehabilitation center. I have been a PA for 4 years now.

That is my story. If anyone out there has questions, just like I did when I was diagnosed, please don't hesitate to contact me.
