Devin Edward

Bicuspid Aortic Stenosis w/ PFO

Devin

Devin was born on June 6, 2003 by c-section and spent 4 days in the special care nursery with rapid breathing, jaundice, feeding problems and a heart murmur. He was diagnosed with fluid in the lungs and that his heart murmur was innocent and not to worry about it.

On a visit to the pediatrician when Devin was about a week old it was suggested to us to get a second opinion about the heart murmur. On July 1st, Devin saw a cardiologist for that second opinion and it turned out that he had a bicuspid aortic valve, aortic stenosis, trace aortic insufficiency and a patent foramen ovale (PFO).

During his first cardiology appointment his peak gradient was 67mmHg and we were sent to U of M Hospital for surgery consultation. It was decided that he would be monitored monthly and when he reached a peak gradient of 80mmHg they would try surgery.

It is now January of 2006 and Devin has been maintaining a peak gradient of 30-35mmHg with no medical intervention. Every 6 months we visit the cardiologist and hold our breath as we wait for the results. We are always reminded by doctors that his condition could still get worse and he still has the possibility of surgery in his future. But we pray everyday for his good health and his little heart.

— Tracy and Nelson, Devin's parents, and sister Kayla (Michigan)
