Kaleb Ashton

VSD Repair, Transverse Arch Repair, Coarctation of the Aorta Repair

Kaleb
Kaleb with Dr. Jacobs (heart surgeon)

From conception, Kaleb started out with an identical twin and had a fraternal twin sister. Kaleb's identical twin was lost around 16 weeks into the pregnancy and Kaleb and his sister, Madison, were born on July 29, 2005 in Tampa, FL. They were preemies, being born 7 weeks early so they spent a while in the NICU. Madison came home after 2-1/2 weeks and Kaleb came home after 9 weeks.

Kaleb was transferred to another hospital 45 minutes away a week after being born. Splitting the twins up was the hardest move, but the best move. He was at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL.

Kaleb had heart surgery on September 6, 2005. The VSD, coarctation of the aorta, and the transverse arch was repaired. He had no energy before the surgery and could not eat from a bottle. He was like a different child after the surgery. It was a long and hard process to go through, but the doctors and nurses were more than great. He was discharged on September 29, 2005 from the hospital and was able to come home for the first time.

Kaleb is such a healthy and lively little boy. His heart surgeon and I still keep in touch and I really hope God blesses him for the work he has done. Kaleb has recently been taken off of his heart medicine and may have to have the balloon procedure done. We will know more at the beginning of October. We're praying that he doesn't have to go through anything else.

— Kim & Madison, Kaleb's mother & Kaleb's twin sister (Gainesville, Florida)
