Leanna

Shones Complex

 Leanna
Leanna at Walt Disney World
Leanna was born healthy. When she was nine days old she went into complete heart failure. When I got her to hospital (I thought she had the flu), she was in bad shape.

She was airlifted to the nearest hospital, Montreal Children's, where they got her stabilized and waited four days to do surgery.

They repaired severe coarctation of aorta, ASD, VSD, and put a suture in her mitral valve to control mild regurgitation.

She also has aortic stenosis, subaortic stenosis, small bottom left ventricle, bicuspid aortic valve, and a dilated aorta (due to surgery).

She had 14 pumps hooked up to her, along with the ventilator after surgery. She looked so tiny in the bed. She is a fighter though. She came home after three weeks.

Once she hit about a year and a half she did better and has been doing pretty good. Every time she gets sick you worry. I thank God every day for the bubbly, happy little girl that I have.

— Lois, Leanna's Mommy (New Brunswick, Canada)

  • Born: December 19, 2002
  • Diagnosis: Shones Complex severe coarctation, atrial septal defect (ASD), ventricular septal defect (VSD), aortic stenosis, subaortic stenosis, small bottom left ventricle, dilated aorta, bicuspid aortic valve. 4months of age: RSV, turned into bronchiolitis naso-gastric tube for four months hospitalized almost every other week for feeding problems or other problems
  • Treatment: The first time Leanna got sick they had to remove her umbilical cord (9 days old) to get an intravenous line into her. She was a very sick little girl. She received 14 blood transfusions and was airlifted to a bigger hospital. There, they got her stable. She had her first open heart at 13 days of age (Jan.1, 2003). they repaired ASD, VSD, severe coarctation, and put a suture in her mitral valve. Leanna had a very rough first year,2003. RSV, bronchiolitis, feeding problems (had a feeding tube from 4-8 months of age), failure to thrive, and several ear and throat infections. She was hospitalized almost every other week for something. She had a balloon valvuloplasty of the aortic valve at two years of age, 2005. During the procedure she went into complete heart block three times. They had to resort to last measures to save her life. She had dental surgery to repair teeth and got a silver tooth at the age of 4 in 2007.
