Patrick

Pacemaker, ASD, Cardiomyopathy

My grandson, Patrick, was born with a complete heart block as the result of his mother being diagnosed with Lupus during the pregnancy. He received a pacemaker immediately after his birth.

During a pediatric cardiologist check up, it was discovered that he had an ASD and it was suggested that we wait to see if it closed on its own or if not, do a surgical repair before his fifth birthday.

This past winter, he spent a week at our local Children's Hospital diagnosed with congestive heart failure. After he became stronger, he was scheduled for open heart surgery to repair the ASD and to implant a pacemaker that would pace both chambers of his heart.

A follow-up check-up revealed that he now has the diagnosis of cardiomyopathy and will perhaps have to have a heart transplant sometime in the future. As a result of this diagnosis, he is on a twice a day prescription of digoxin and Lasix.

Patrick also has apraxia of speech, some developmental delays, and fine motor problems. With all of the above, he is still the most beautiful and lovable little grandson anyone could ever wish for.
